Birth of General Motors - Part 4 - Main Entrance
Located just under the Pontiac Mills ghost sign ( picture is on my page ) , this was the main entrance to this building when it originally opened in 1899. This is the North East side of the building ( the sign on the side of the building says "Pontiac Mills" - their logo is surprisingly similar to that of Cadillac . It is interesting that this is NOT a historical building and does not have a historical marker. The Pontiac name was first used in 1906 by the Pontiac Spring & Wagon Works, located in Pontiac Michigan - about 40 miles from Detroit. The Oakland Motor Company and Pontiac Spring & Wagon Works Company merged in November 1908 under the name of the Oakland Motor Car Company. The operations of both companies were joined together in Pontiac, Michigan (in Oakland County) to build the Cartercar. Oakland was purchased by General Motors in 1909. Essentially, the first GM cars were built here. The building is huge and was most recently used as an appliance warehouse but I am not sure if it is still in use. There is not really a road to get to this facility. The address on the building is painted on as 20 Franklin, but the road here is a path next to the railroad tracks. The street does have a sign ( it begins with L, laredo or something, I forget unfortunately ) . This building is located near an Akzo Nobel plant that is still in use.

I can't imagine how old this ghost sign must be, but between the appliance parts and the phone number at the bottom, I'm guessing really old!
